I wouldn't be anything without Chirst! His unfailling love and grace is the reason why I'm even able to take in the very breth I breath. He saved me and made me a "new creation" in the summer of '99. My life has never been the same since.

God has already led me down a lot of exciting roads in my short live. The one He is leading me on right now is ministering to my Haitian friends as a missionary with an independent Christian mission organization called Haiti Gospel Mission. Out of all the exciting things God has allowed me to do so far, this ministry of changing eternity and giving people hope through Christ is by far the greatest.

I started this blog site as a way to keep my prayer warriors and supporters updated on how the ministry is going. Just let me know if you want to know more about me or HGM. God Bless!

Mission Update for May (Tragic Losses and Victories Gains)

Hey Everybody,

It's hard to believe that it's already time to send out another update to you to let you know what God has been doing here at Haiti Gospel Mission. This has definitely been one of the busiest months and also one of the hardest emotionally, but God has been with us each step of the way helping us and giving us victories over Satan.

A couple weeks ago we had a good friend of mine Rev. David Fulton down here to spend a little over a week preaching at 3 of our churches. The first church we took him to was Morne Rouge, the mountain church that is so hard to get to. I knew it was going to be a different kind of trip when we met up with some friends on our way up to the drop off point where we would start our hike up to the church. I was asking them how the church was doing since my last visit there and their faces got long and sober. They informed me that one of the infant twins that I prayed with (I had a picture of them on one of my last updates) had died along with another young lady I had prayed with who had gotten sick after giving birth. When we finally made it to the top of the mountain we were greeted by the orphans. I wasn't surprised to see that the number of orphans had grown from 25 to 28. It was a joy to get to spend more time with the people that I love, to play games with the kids, and grow closer to my friends. Every time I turned around though there was another desperate need staring me in the face. By the time we finally made it back home 4 days later I thought my heart was going to burst from the pain that came every time I stopped to think about the needs up on the mountain. God used Bro. Fulton at our Leogon Church and our mother church here in Depinos as well. By the time he boarded his plane to head back home about 8 people had accepted Christ as their Savior and hundreds more had been encouraged in the Lord! We praise God for those wonderful victories and thank you for your prayers!!!

The same day that Bro. Fulton left for the states a couple more friends of mine came to see first hand what God has been doing here and see how they might be able to get involved. It was a joy to have Matt and Garrett here with us helping out with the Bible studies and some odd and end jobs around the mission. They were such an encouragement to us and the people around here. Everybody here can't wait for the day that the white musicians come back to visit. While they were here I think we ended up having a Bible study every night. The one that was the most fun was our children's service out in Cocoyer. It was only our second service ever to have out there. We had right at 100 people show up and most all of them stayed to play soccer after the service was over. If your heart is heavy and broken and you need a break, let me suggest playing what turned out to be "keep away from the whites" with about 100 cute smiling little kids. Nothing can put a smile on your face like being shown up by a 7 or 8 year old boy with bare feet. We had a great time and were able to build some friendships with some of the people in that community at the same time.

While David, Matt and Garrett were here we took them by Yeman's house to visit and pray with her as often as we could. Many of you may remember me talking about the older lady with AIDS that had gotten saved shortly after Joel and April had moved here as missionaries. That was Yeman. She was in fact the first convert that Joel and April had when they got here. We have all been so excited to see her growing in her faith recently. She has been an influence with the ladies that live around her and through the Bible study that April has been having with her some of those ladies have recently been saved. Well to keep a long story short Yeman started really losing her mind a couple of weeks ago. The AIDS and the sicknesses she has been fighting finally started really causing her to lose control. She has been a warrior for Christ, facing things that most of us know nothing about. Men would come and surround her house at night with machetes threatening to kill her and burn her house down because she had left voodoo and was serving Christ. It was hard for us to see such a warrior in this new distorted mind set. She would wonder off to use the bathroom in the morning and not come home until late that night having no clue what see had been doing or why she had left. Well, the night after Matt and Garrett left we got a knock on the gate. It was about 10 o'clock at night and everybody was settling in getting ready for bed, so I didn't go to answer it. Pretty soon one of our workers Raynold unlocked the gate and came and got me saying Yeman has burned her head. I went and got April and everyone else and we headed out the door. Nothing could have ever prepared any of us for what we saw when we got to her house. I will not try to go in to any details but to say that in one of her moments of not being in her right mind Yeman had locked the door to her house, taken a bottle of gas, poured it over her head and all down her body and lit herself on fire. All she could manage to say to April was "please make it stop burning" and "I was asleep, it's not my fault." That was one of the longest most horrific nights of my life seeing her in such pain and not being able to do anything but drive the truck to get supplies and to pray. We finally got her wrapped up enough so we could take her to the clinic to try to treat her there. In all the pain she was in she asked us to sing hymns to her so she could try to calm down. I think it was about 7 in the morning when April was trying to change her wrapping again and Yeman had had enough. She got out of the bed and laid down on the floor and told April she didn't want help any more. I knew she was laying down to die and there was no more I could do but come home and start asking people back in the states to pray. Joel stayed there and read Psalms to her until she took her last breath. I didn't get far in asking people to pray before Joel came and told me she had passed away. I sat down to write this update just hours after coming back from the funeral and I would be lying if I said I haven't had a hard time with putting my thoughts into words. It has been hard on all of us here and we thank you for your prayers.

Through all of this God has been reminding me of some verses that I've been studying lately. These are a few of the verses that we wrote down and gave to Yeman just days before she passed away. Please read them carefully.

Romans 8:35,37-39 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

What a wonderful loving God we serve. We praise Him that every one of the people we lost this month had accepted Him as their Savior and were ready to meet Him in a much better place. We also praise Him for the souls that were saved this month and the ones that have shown signs of growth in the Lord.

Mission Update for April

Hey everybody.

I hope everything is going well for you all.  God has been continuing to bless us here at Haiti Gospel Mission and showing us more and more how much He loves us and the people we are working to reach for Him.  It's been a little over a month since my last update and a lot has happened in that time that I want to catch you up on.  First of all I want to thank you for your wonderful response to my last update.  I had made mention of the fact that I still needed a good pair of hiking boots for my trips up to our church in the mountains.  It never crossed my mind that anyone would read that and feel moved to get me a pair.  Apparently I drastically underestimated how much you all care about this ministry and want to be a part of what God is doing here in any way possible.  You guys blew me away with how many people offered to get me some hiking boots.  I thank the Lord that I have a good pair now, thank you.  I think if I would have accepted every offer people gave me I would probably be able to open up a shoe store by now.  Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!

Not only is it exciting for me to see how God is using you to provide things like hiking boots, it's even more exciting to see how He is answering your prayers for us.  I could never tell you about each and every answer to prayer that God provides for us daily but to try to help you understand a little bit of what I'm talking about I want to tell you about some answers that God gave us right after I sent out my last update.  Many of you know about how God has been leading us to reach out to one of the main witchdoctors that lives a short distance from the mission.  We have been able preach about the love of Christ in his voodoo temple before and pray with him on many occasions.  Joel has been working on him real hard and God used one of the last talks they had to open up the opportunity for us to show the "Jesus Film" in the voodoo temple.  They set the date for that Thursday and we began praying for God to use it to save souls.

That week was a very busy week including that Thursday.  We stayed busy right up until it was time to get ready for the service.  It wasn't until then that we realized that the small portable generator we were going to be using to power the projector, computer, and the sound system was not working.  We were running out of time so we went ahead and gathered up everything else we would be needing like chairs and a sheet for the screen and hauled it down to the temple to start getting things set up.  We had made a couple of phone calls to see if we could find another generator to use but wasn't having any success.  After helping the ladies get started setting everything up Joel and I headed back to the mission to see if we could figure out what was wrong with the small generator.  As soon as we pulled the dipstick for the oil out we realised what the problem was.  Oil came pouring out, someone had filled it WAY too full with oil.  While we were working on it trying to get it to run (in dress clothes mind you) April called and told us that God had answered our prayers just in time.  Someone had brought a tiny little generator down to the temple for us to use.  It's amazing to me how God's timing is always so perfect.  We rushed back to the temple just in time to join them in the last part of the devotional they were having with Pastor Wido.

When our friends had dropped off the generator they had shown us how easy it was to get it started "just flip it on and pull the cord."  Sounds simple, right?  Well, the devotional was finished and it was time to start the film.  I stepped outside flipped the switch and pulled the cord...  to my horror nothing happened.  I mean it didn't even pretend like it was going to start.  I tried a few more times and still nothing.  At this point I started flipping ever knob and switch I could find every way I could and still nothing.  By this time Joel and Peter had come out to see what was going on and even with their help I couldn't get it started.  Finally April stepped outside to see why things weren't going as planned.  After a minute of realizing the situation she told us we needed to pray.  I told her to start praying and I would pull so we did.  Peter, Joel and April all bowed their heads and started praying.  They didn't get probably 3 words into their prayer and without flipping any more switches or anything I pulled the cord again just the way I had been pulling it all along.  The generator started right up like there was never a problem!!  You should have seen the smiles on our faces when we realized what had happened.

The film got started and everything was going fine.  People kept coming and the place was getting packed with people standing outside watching.  Everything was going fine that is until the battery ran out on the computer.  The generator was too small to handle the projector, sound system and the computer so as long as we were running the computer off of the battery we were good.  The battery ran out just as Christ was carrying the cross up Mt. Calvary.  The main part of Christ dying on the cross and being raised from the dead was what we really wanted the people to see.  We worked and worked and couldn't get it to play any longer.  Realizing that God was still in control even though He might not do things just the way we want Him to we started to close the service with prayer asking if anyone wanted to come forward and accept Christ as their Savior.  Praise the Lord one of the witchdoctor's girls came forward and accepted Christ into her heart that night.

We are thankful those aren't the only answers to prayer that God has blessed us with this month.  It's not even the only person that has gotten saved this month but I wanted to share that story with you to show you just how much God answers prayer for us and how thankful we are that you are praying for us.  I'm glad to report that the new converts are doing well and growing in Christ through the new believers study that April is doing with them.

Mission Update (Return Trip Back to the Mountain Church)

Hey Everybody

I know it hasn't been long since my last update, but I have so much I wanted to share with you about my trip back up the mountain to visit the people of Maroughes that I knew it would take up a whole newsletter by itself.  It was a wonderful trip that I wasn't expecting to get to take again so soon.  If I had to sum up the whole trip in one sentence I would have to say the trip was emotionally and physically draining, eye-opening and yet still so wonderful.  I was a little more prepared this time in that I had bought a hiking pack and knew a little better what I needed and didn't need to take with me.  I still need to get a good pair of hiking boots though because the slip-on shoes that I have just don't cut it when climbing mountains.   The trip started out with me walking out the gate with the pack on my back and a smile on my face headed to Pastor Wildo's house.  It was 6 o'clock on a Saturday morning and those of you who know me well know that it is a miracle from God any time that I have a smile on my face at that time in the morning.  After a little bit of a walk and 2 taptap rides, Wildo and I were on the bus leaving Port-Au-Prince headed to Gonaive.

Now let me take a moment to explain what riding on a bus or a taptap in Haiti is like so you can get the whole picture.  A taptap is the most common form of public transportation around here.  It is a small sized pickup (normally Toyota, Isuzu, or Mazda)  that has a camper top on the back raised about a foot off the bed to allow the people in the back to sit up straight without hitting their head too much.  From my experience they normally will hold an average of about 14 adults in the back of the taptap plus whatever cargo those people have with them.  For the most part the adults have a very foul odor and the cargo can range any where from sacks of rice to several live goats hog-tied and thrown on the floor.  Now imagine that truck swerving in and out of crazy traffic going as fast as it can down a road that makes a washboard seem smooth.  The best way I have found to describe driving in Haiti is to say it's like playing one big game of chicken.  Whoever has the bigger truck with the loudest horn and the most guts wins the right of way.  Bus rides are not much better.  They are normally old school buses from the states that have the seats falling apart in them.  They have a rack welded down each side to help hold cargo, that is if the welds are still holding together.  The people are just as packed as in a taptap and still smell just as bad and they have just as much if not more cargo with them.  The driving is just as crazy as the taptaps and the roads are always rough.  Oh and did I mention that the thought of having air conditioning is to be laughed at and the dust covers EVERYTHING.

With that in mind let's get back to the trip to the mountains.  As you can imagine I was very happy when Wildo stopped the bus for us to get off.  On the first trip we were driving our truck so we had to drive around the mountain to the other side where we could leave the truck parked behind a gate while we were gone.  Going around the mountain had added about 2 more hours of driving to the first trip.  This time the bus dropped us off in the middle of nowhere.  The only thing that was there was a dirt road heading toward the base of the mountains and a few guys on mopeds ready to take people where they needed to go.  One of the guys from the church showed up a few minutes later with his dirtbike and I climbed on.  Pastor Wildo got one of the moped drivers and off we went.  I think it was about 10 minutes into the ride when it started raining on us.  After a total of about 15 minutes and driving through 2 creeks the dirt road turned into a small footpath.  It was right after the second creek we drove through that the dirtbike I was riding on lost traction with its wet wheels on the slick rocks.  I was very thankful that we were able to catch it before it fell over on top of us.  Right after that was when we got to the cliffs.  The little path we were driving on was in some spots only a few feet away from some very steep cliffs.  I don't think I would have been near as nervous about it if we had not just come so close to falling off the bike.  Before long the 45 minute thrill ride was up because we had reached the point that even a dirtbike couldn't go any further.

Right about the time we got off the bikes the rain really set in and started pouring down.  There was not a dry stitch of clothing on my body including the clothes that were in my pack.  It wasn't long before those slip-on shoes of mine were getting stuck in the mud and trying to slip off.  The longer we climbed, the longer it rained.  The longer it rained, the more the path we were climbing turned into a stream of muddy water and slick rocks.  I don't know if it was because he felt sorry for me or if he got tired of laughing at me but my friend and dirtbike driver Bro. Vision offered to carry my pack for me after the mud got real bad.  I gave it to him without any argument at all.  It finally stopped raining right before we got to the top of the mountain which made the last 10 minutes of the climb a little better.  When we topped the mountain I saw one of the most welcoming sights a person could ever see.  The house I was to stay the night in was surrounded by kids waving as hard as they could at the white man who had returned for a visit.  They are probably going to start thinking that every white man they see has candy to give them.

After a good meal and a moment's rest we headed out for some more climbing to go visit some of the sick church members on the next mountain over.  That is where the trip got real emotional for me.  When I had first arrived, I saw my buddy Marksonel waiting for me with the rest of the kids.  The first trip he had actually come part way down the mountain to greet us and had carried some of my stuff for me.  He is one of the greatest 12 year old boys you could ever possibly meet.  When I got to him to give him a hug I saw that his right eye and part of his face was swelled up real bad.  They told me that he had fallen on the rocks, so I asked them if he had been to the doctor.  That is when they looked at me sadly and said there is no doctor here.  The closest doctor is in Gonaive which would mean getting down the mountain I had just fought to get up and then taking the thrill ride on a moped to get to the closest road only to have to wait for a taptap to come along that wasn't full and could give you a ride the rest of the way into town, and all that is if you even have the money for all of that plus paying the doctor.  So, my heart was already breaking before we headed out to see the sick church members.  I lost count of how many people we prayed with but the whole time I was fighting back tears.  It seemed like every other house we passed just about had someone with something wrong with them in it.  I finally had too much and couldn't hold back the tears any longer when we walked into one of the last houses to pray with a sick young lady who couldn't get out of bed.  When I saw her lying there I knew that the only way I would get to see her alive again is if God answered the prayers we were praying.  She was probably about my age or maybe a little older and was nothing but a skeleton with skin on it.  She would hardly talk to us when we asked her anything.

Sometimes seeing all the needs that surround you gets to be more than you can bear.  The school for these children is just a grass and bamboo hut that is falling down all the way around.  The nearest doctor is impossible to get to for most of the sick people.  There are 25 orphans in our church alone that need a place to live and food in their bellies.  Then when you do run into a family that is doing ok compared to the people around them you find out that even they are worried about being able to feed the 2 little twin girls they just had because they don't know where the food is going to come from.  You find yourself thinking about all these things and then it hits you. God has more love for these people than I ever could and His heart is broken far deeper than mine.  He wants more than I or anyone else to meet their every need but He is waiting for you and I to be His hands and feet to reach them with His love.  What a place that puts you in when that really sinks in!

It started to get dark and the pastors rushed me home for the night.  On the way I made a big mistake.  Trying to practice my Creole as much as possible, I asked Bro. Vision if he loved bananas as we passed a grove of banana trees.  He told me he did and asked if I liked them.  Thinking in my head of the pill'em and eat'em bananas we eat in the states I told him yes I love them a lot.  "Good," he said with a smile "I'll give you one when we get back to the house."  I was excited and looking forward to a good fresh banana like any good Chiquita lover would do.  We got back and to my surprise there was another meal sitting on the table waiting on us (I think they think Americans like to eat ever time they turn around).  Bro. Vision still smiling, glad to offer me the banana that I love, pulled off the cover to the food to reveal a plate full of cooked bananas that tasted nothing like pill'em and eat'em bananas.  In fact it is one of the few Haitian foods that I really try to avoid as much as possible.  They piled my plate full.  I ate as much as I could, but having the children standing around you while you eat looking at you hoping they might be able to get a bite makes you lose your appetite very quickly.  Just so happens that night I lost it a little quicker than I normally would.

After the meal I asked if I could go ahead and take my bath before going to bed.  After learning last time that the bucket was used as the night time bathroom I thought it would be safest to use it as a "bathtub" before we went to bed.  Nothing tells you that you are on the mission field like kneeling on dirt floor to rinse your hair in a bucket of cold mountain stream water in a candle lit room as the wind blows the door open for all the world to see.  After that experience was over and I put on some wet clothes from out of my still wet pack I went back in the house to learn the song they wanted me to sing in church the next day.  Again for those of you who know me well you know that also was a miracle of God for me to sing.  You should have heard them laughing at me as we went over "Trust and Obey" in Creole again and again and again.

The next morning I found a way to get out of wearing my suit coat to church.  Pastor Wildo's suit had gotten caught in the chain of the moped and was full of holes.  I immediate insisted that the good pastor wear mine even though it was about 3 sizes to big for him.  The church service went great and the people told me they were surprised to see that I came back after hurting my ankle last time I was up there.   One of the main reasons for the trip was to give them some books they were needing for their Sunday School classes and to give the pastor some books to help him with his studies.  They were all so happy to get the books and started using them right away.  In fact the whole church had the first key verse put to memory before Sunday School was over.  These are books that your support helped to buy.  So let me say from all the people on the mountain, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!  After church was over and I had gotten tired of taking pictures of the kids, we went visiting a few more sick people we had not been able to visit the day before.  Then it was back to the house for one last meal and hugs goodbye.  As I was leaving my friend Marksonel came up to me and said "Pastor Jesse you pray for me and I will pray for you."  That alone made every slip on the rocks to get there worth it 10 times over.

2 moped rides, 2 taptap rides, a long bus ride, 2 more taptap rides, and yet one more moped ride later and I was back in Despinos sitting in the dark at pastor Wildo's house eating fish.  Now I like all the fish that I have ever had here in Haiti and when Wildo asked me if I like fish I immediately thought of the fish that I was eating at that moment.  Not having learned anything from the banana experience, I told him that I loved fish.  He had already invited me back over to eat again Monday night.  You will never guess what I had to eat Monday night.  It was the cooked bananas I had in the mountains and fish, except this time the fish were bigger and still had their eyeballs fully attached.  It was a fitting end to my second Maroughes experience.  I was holding a sick naked little 2 year old girl trying to feed her as much of the bananas and eyeballed fish as she would eat while the cat was trying to climb my leg and the skeleton looking dog begged for food.  It was in the midst of all that when I thought "you know, this is what it is all about, making friends and trying your best to show them the love of Christ."  Thank you for making moments like that possible through all of your many prayers and the support that you give so generously!!

Things we could use your help praying for:

1   We are working on scheduling a mobile clinic for the people at Maroughes but need to find a place to have the clinic and spend the night for about 4 nights, that is far enough up the mountain that the people can get down to it but not so far up that the ladies working the clinic wouldn't be able to get to it with all their supplies.
2   The many other needs of the people in Maroughes
3   That God will give us guidance and His wisdom as we are making some important decisions over the next month or so

Mission Update Lots of Progress and Praises

Hey everybody,

It is hard to believe that it has been a month since the last time I wrote to you.  Time flies by so fast around here it seems.  This last month has been an eventful one with lots of progress going on.  For one, I've actually got windows in my house now which is a big improvement and the addition to the other mission house is coming along at a quick pace.  We are very happy about that because the big teams that we are trying to make room for will start arriving in just a few more months.

Thanks to your answered prayers I'm also making progress in speaking the language.  I still have a long way to go but I'm actually having conversations with my Haitian friends now without having to ask someone to interpret for me every few seconds, and I was able to pray in Creole for the first time at church last Sunday.  I'm also learning my way around a lot better.  Joel's drivers license was stolen a few weeks ago so I've been doing all the driving which is helping me get used to where everything is around here.

Those things are great, but the most important progress that is being made is the souls that are being saved.  I've been trying to do my best to help Joel with the Bible study that he has been doing with the men in the area.  I've not been a whole lot of help yet but I'm praying that as I get better with the language that will change.  God is blessing the study though and we can see some of the guys are really hungry for God and close to getting saved.  April's Bible study with the ladies is going wonderfully as well.  I got a call from April a few weeks ago when she was having the study, she told me that 2 of the ladies wanted to pray to be saved and she wanted me to try to take some pictures of it.  It was such a treat to be there as those ladies each prayed to God for forgiveness and to see the smiles on their faces when they stood up as a child of the King.  I also got word that one of our other churches had a voodoo priestess get saved this Sunday and had a bonfire and burnt all the voodoo stuff that she brought with her to get rid of.  What a wonderful and amazing God we serve!  His grace is more than enough no matter how far in sin you are when He reaches you.

Another thing that is so amazing about our God is that He puts you right where He wants you when He wants to, even when we don't realize it at the time.  This last Sunday James was going to visit a friend's church and be a part of a special service they were having.  He was planning on riding a taptap to church like he does any time he goes there to visit.  Sunday morning just before James was getting ready to leave the pastor of that church called James and invited me to come with him.  I thought it would be nice to visit the church and decided I'd go alone.  I was thinking that Joel and April would need the truck to take the Bible study people to church so we were planning on still taking a taptap to the church.  Just as we were leaving April told us that the people from the Bible study had planned on coming on their own this Sunday for the first time, so we could take the truck if we wanted to.  If you have ever been in a taptap you would understand how happy we were to take the truck.  The service was great and the pastor invited us to stay for some food after it was over.  Close to the end of lunch the pastor got a call and ran out of the room in a hurry like something was bad wrong.  Pretty soon he came back and told us that he needed me to take his neighbor to the hospital.  I didn't know what to expect. I was thinking maybe she burned herself or cut herself trying to cook.  When I pulled up in front of her house they started carrying out this lady that looked dead to me.  I hollered back at James to find out if she was breathing or not as they loaded her in the bed of the truck.  He checked and she was, so we sped off to the nearest clinic.  It was closed so we rushed on down to a doctor's house who's front gate was open.  He was home so they carried her in.  I later found out that she had drank some poison to try to kill herself because of some family problems she was having.  James told me on the way home that he didn't know what they would have done if we had not been there to get her to the doctor.  God knew what was going to happen ahead of time and in His grace and love for this lady had worked it out to give her another chance.  She is doing much better now and is not so ready to die.  Thank the Lord for His amazing grace!

I also had the opportunity to help out with a mobile clinic that we had this past month in Leogon.  It was a successful clinic with around 75 people getting teeth pulled, burns treated, and sicknesses cured.  I praise the Lord for that, and praise the Lord for the successful trip of our first team we had this past week.  They were a tremendous help while they where here and we look forward to seeing them again soon.  Another thing I want to praise God for is how He continues to lay it on people's hearts to support my work here.  Most of you know that when I came here I had not fully reached 100% of my needed monthly support.  Since I have been here I have continued to get emails from people and churches that are interested in giving towards supporting my ministry here.  One more praise is that the God continues to work in big ways with our church that has been having some difficulties.  It seems like each week more progress is being made there and we don't take that for granted.  We know that it is only happening because of your prayers and the God we all love so much.

Things we could use your help praying for:

1    For those that have gotten saved recently, that God will help them grow close to Him

2    That everything will go smoothly for Joel when he tries to get a replacement Drivers License

3    For the lady that tried to kill herself, that she will find Christ as her Savior

4    My continued improvement in the language

5    God's continued help with the church that has been having some difficulties

6    That we will be able to get the Suburban we need so much into the country very soon

Thank you so very much for all your prayers and support!

Trip to Marouges

Hey everybody,

I know it hasn’t been long at all since the last time I wrote to you but so much as gone on in the last little while that I thought I'd better catch you up on how Awesome our God is.  First of all and thanks to the help of my good friend Larry, we have a lot done on the rewiring of my house.  I actually had electricity for a few days straight but then my cheap generic inverter broke.  The receipt from where I bought it should be in the cargo that I am still waiting on.  As soon as I get that we are going to try to take the inverter back and hopefully that will fix the problem.

Now on to one of the awesome parts.  The first Sunday I was here we went to visit our church in Petionville.  It’s a tiny building with a “sanctuary” about the size of an average bedroom in the states.  One of the mission's goals for this year is to help the church find a bigger place to worship and to have their school in.  We had a great time there and then we went to leave.  Some of you know this story already but the truck would not start.  We were not in the best of neighborhoods and it was turning out to be more than a simple repair job.  After a few hours we found a way home for April, Emma and Larry ( my friend who was helping us out for a week).  After a total of about 7 hours the truck finally started up and we were on the our way home after dark.   God protected us as we drove through 3 voodoo celebrations that where blocking the streets and through several police check points.  When we finally got home we were all amazed at how God kept us safe through the whole thing.  Later that night I got on my email and found several churches and individuals had e-mailed me saying they had been praying for me that day that God would bless the work and keep us safe.  Praise the Lord, He loves to answer your prayers.  Thank you so much.

Well that was last Sunday, but the most amazing thing happened this Sunday.  Joel, I, pastor Wildo (the pastor of our Gonaive church), and James (my Haitian friend of many years who is staying at my house right now) all headed up to our church outside of Gonaive.  This was the mission's first visit to the actual church itself.  We were told it was going to be about a 5 hour drive up there and then a short 30 minute walk up the mountain to the church.  That’s what we were told.  About 5 hours passed by and we were coming out of the city of Gonaive.  We passed fields full of make-shift little tents where people were still trying to survive after the hurricanes and floods of last year destroyed their homes.  Pretty soon we made it to the turn off that would take us to the church.  About another hour or so of taking the little Mazda down roads that no truck should ever go on we finally found the very end of the road.  After sitting on a board in the back of the truck getting a real good sunburn, eating dust for around 6 hours and holding on for dear life most of the time,  you can imagine the joy that filled my heart when we reached the end of the road.  In my mind we only had a simple 30 minute climb left to go.  After eating a nice meal we headed out with our bags in hand.  It couldn’t be a bad climb, after all our guide was balancing a car battery on his head and some of the others that were with us were barefoot carrying coolers on there heads.  I shake my head as I remember how we started out running joyfully up the mountain looking forward to a good night's sleep.  I think is was after the second or third stream we crossed that the path we were following started getting steeper and steeper and we started going slower and slower.  By this time we were thanking the Lord for a bright moon and a good breeze.  A little ways more and we started seeing stars and I don’t mean the kind in the sky, I’m talking about the kind you see when you have pushed yourself too far.   About an hour in to our “30 minute” climb, James pointed back to a faint glow in the far distance below us and tells me “that is where we parked the truck.”  I could not believe we where that far away or that high up.  I was also starting to wonder if we were ever going to get there before my legs fell off my body.  About an hour and a half into the climb I started looking for a nice spot for my grave because I knew I was not coming off that mountain alive.  By this time all the Haitians with coolers and batteries on their heads were getting a big kick out of the fact that white people couldn’t make it to the top without having to take a few breaks.  After a total of about a 2 hour climb, we arrived at the mud house we were to spend the night at.  We were on the top of one of the tallest mountains around and every muscle in my body knew it.  Joel and I were the first white people to ever climb the mountain!  A lot of the people especially the kids had never seen a white person in their life.  Its amazing how a little bit of candy can make life long friends.  Pastor Marite invited us into his mud house and insisted that Joel and I were to sleep on the 2 beds they had while he, his wife and their 7 kids slept on the floor in the only other room.  After eating what I hope was goat liver and singing some songs, we thought it was time to turn in for the night.  Have you ever tried to go to sleep with about 7 or 8 people staring at you?  Well, if you haven’t, let me tell you it doesn’t matter how tired you are, it is hard to do.  In the morning they provided us with a bucket and a cup to use for a “shower.”  We later found out that the bucket we used to bathe in also doubled as the indoor bathroom at night.  Yeah, that was nice to find out.  As a pastor or a missionary you are expected to wear a suit and tie to church in Haiti no matter what the conditions are. So after getting ready, we all headed up another mountain to get to the church.  Yes, that’s right, we still had not made it to where the church was.  30 minutes of mountain climbing in dress shoes, suit and tie, we had reached our final destination.  The little mud church was a sight to behold with its bamboo school setting right beside it on the top of the mountain.  The church runs around 120 and the school 150.  The Lord blessed us with a wonderful time worshiping with our Haitian brothers and sisters.  We were able to see the walls that were destroyed by one of the hurricanes last year and meet the 25 kids the church is wanting to build an orphanage for.  As we finally started winding our way back down to the truck I kept thinking about how great our God is for not only creating such a beautiful place but for giving His saving grace to the desperate people who live there.  I am looking forward to my next trip up the mountain to the village of Maroughes but it will have to wait until the sunburn is gone and the sprained ankle is healed.  Thank you all so very much for all your prayers and support.

First Update From Haiti

Hey everybody,

For the first time I am saying hello from Haiti! It still hasn't sunk into my head yet that I am really here, really in the country that God has called me to. It felt so good to get to hug all my friends once again and unpack my suitcase for the last time for a while. I got here on Wednesday. I won't be able to get my cargo out of customs for a few weeks but I can live without it for as long as I need to. There have been some great changes that have taken place here since I've been gone. After leaving the airport we stopped by our school in Despinos before going home. It was lunch time and the kids were all eating! I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw it. It's been a desperate need for that school to be able to give the kids a hot meal each day, but we have never had the means to do that with until now. Because of God placing the need on your hearts and you responding to Him these kids are getting fed on a regular basis now (something most of them are not used to). We had a supporter start sending in money just for this need and we can't say thank you enough.

I wish there was a way that I could explain to you just how much having the new generators improves just about ever part of our lives here. It makes it so much easier to live and minister here when you don't have to spend money and time worrying about things like that breaking down all the time. Thank you again to all of you who had a part in us being able to get the generators. It has made a big difference around here. Something else that has changed is baby Micheal. He is growing up way too fast! He will be 7 months old soon and is one of the happiest babies I have ever seen. I praise God every time I think of how his little life would have ended up if it wasn't for our Lord's amazing grace. The difficulty that we have been facing and praying about in one of our churches is still there but God is changing hearts and it is looking better and better.

Some things still haven't changed like the mosquitoes that are biting me as I sit here and write to you, or the noises that are going on all night, every night. It's great to be back home in Haiti even if the mosquitoes are still everywhere. Thank the Lord for all the great changes that are taking place and for bug spray.

Please pray for one of the orphanages that we help out. One of the young boys died recently and the funeral is Sunday. It is hard on everyone around here that knew him and especially on the people at the orphanage. I'm sure they will be glad for your prayers.

Other things we need your help to pray for:
1 Continue to pray for the church that is having some difficulties right now
2 We have a lot of teams coming to help through out the next several months, please pray for God's guidance and blessing on them
3 That God will continue to help me with the language (it's clicking in my mind a little bit its just getting my mouth to do what my mind tells it to do, that is the problem)
4 That people we are ministering to will truly understand the meaning of salvation and come to know Jesus as their Savior
5 For God to give us guidance as we try to reach out to some of the areas around us that have not been reached yet.

Thank you again for your prayers and your faithful support!

January Mission Update

That warming sensation that you get when you know God is speaking to you very clearly started in my chest and quickly spread through the rest of my body.  It was coupled as it always is with a sense of reverent fear and strengthened awareness not wanting to miss anything that God was saying to me.  I read the scripture again.  "The land you are... to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven.  It is a land the LORD your God cares for; the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end" (Deuteronomy 11:11-12).  God was using His word to confirm in my heart that this land He is sending me to is His land.  It might be dedicated to Satan but God is the Creator.  He has not taken His eyes off of its people!  His love for them is still as strong as the day He sent His Son to die for them.  This ministry is His ministry.  It's not something new that He decided to work on.  It is the outpouring of His love on these Haitian people that He has been planning since before the foundations of the world.  Once that started to sink into my heart, God followed it up with a reconfirmed peace of knowing that whatever problems I may face in Haiti they are in His hands.  Whatever happens, it will only happen under his watchful eyes.

Hey Everybody,

The God who calls, provides!  It has been several years since God called me to His ministry and started leading me to the Haitian people. Many times I doubted if I would ever make it to the mission field, but Wednesday I bought my one way plane ticket to Haiti.  God called me through His love, and now He is providing my needs through your love.  Thank you!  It has been way too long since my last update, and I sincerely apologize for that.  A lot has happened over the last few months that I want to fill you in on.

First of all, Joel, April and Emma were able to come back to the states for a brief stay to visit with those churches that are supporting their ministry with the mission.  We praise the Lord for allowing them a successful and safe trip filled with lots of blessings.  They flew back home to Haiti on Friday.

April says that baby Michael is very healthy and growing like a weed.  Thank you for praying for him and the rest of the children the Lord is allowing us to minister to.  I can't wait until the 28th when I get to see "my kids" again!  I've been missing my little buddies pretty bad here lately.  If you every get a chance to meet them for yourself you will understand completely, trust me.

The last time I sent out an update 61% of the monthly support for my part of the ministry had been pledged, today that number is at 72%.  I have four more churches to speak at between now and the time my plane leaves out.  I thank God for the 72% that has already been pledged and look forward to seeing where He has the other 28% waiting at.  My Grandpa (who is still in the full time ministry after serving God's people for over 50 years) reminded me recently that some times God provides in the strangest of ways.  He told me of how God used a garbage collector to help provide his family's needs for about 30 years.  So, if there are any garbage collectors out there I'd love to talk to ya!

We praise the Lord that He has provided for several different building project that have been needing to be done.  It is so encouraging to see the dreams and visions God has given us for this ministry start to take shape.  I'm sure that the next several months of trying to squeeze construction work  into an already demanding ministry schedule won't be easy, but my God is the Master Builder.  He is able to build up both walls and men!  Pray that He will give us the strength to do the same.

Please also pray for one of our churches and its leaders.  Satan is causing some problems within the leadership of that church and we know we are fighting a war that is not against flesh and blood.  We ask that you would specifically pray for the church and its leaders, and that we can find a solution that brings harmony.  We have already seen God working on hearts and praise Him for that.

He has also provided us with the means of having a website that we can regularly post updates and pictures on.  He is still in the process of providing me with the wisdom on how to build and maintain that website, so I ask that you please continue to pray for me in that way.  As soon as it is up and running i will send you a link so you can add it to your favorites and check on us on a regular basis.

Here are a few other things that we could use your help in praying for:

1)    Our church and school in Petionville is looking for land to buy.  It has outgrown the small building it has been renting, and land for a good price can some times be hard to find.
2)    That my move will go smoothly and that we can get the wiring in my house fixed quickly.
3)    I also need God's help in continuing to learn the language.
4)    That God will allow us to get the vehicle He has provided for us into the country asap.
5)    That the Lord of the Harvest will call more laborers into this white harvest field.

August Update

Hey Everybody.

To start off with let me say thank you so much for praying for me, my trip, the mission, and all the needs!  God is BIG and loves to answer prayer in a BIG way.  Many of you were praying for my safe return back to the states because of the riots that were supposed to be going on and Hurricane Gustav that hit Haiti.  The BIG God that we serve kept the riots from happening and pushed the hurricane far enough away that I could fly out and arrive home as scheduled.  Thank you and praise the Lord!

There as been so many answers to prayer this month I'm not sure where to begin.  It was a very busy month.  We had one VBS the week before I arrived and two more after I got there.  Through your prayers and the hard work that April and the others put into it God allowed us to see 100 people ask Jesus to save them from their sins this month!  Isn't our God amazing?!?!  100 eternities changed!  God is so good.  As far as the kids at the VBS programs go, we ended up having a total of around 550 kids.  Because of people like you supporting the work we were able to fill their belly's with plenty of food and give them a prize and candy.  If you could have seen those hungry kids shoveling that food into their mouths like there was no tomorrow you would never forget it.

We also had 11 people from our Despinos Church finish the baptism classes and get baptized.  One of which was a sweet 80 year old single lady that grabbed my heart as she testified to being "married to Jesus."  What a treat it was to get to see the smiles on their faces as they sang about the blood of Jesus and stepped into the water!

As a lot of you know we have two orphanages that are not a part of our mission but that we help and work with very closely.  We provide all the medical care for them and visit them often as well as helping with other needs.  In fact one of those orphanages is where one of our VBS programs was held.  We have helped place orphans into those orphanages but have been hoping and praying to be able to also start an orphanage of our own.  God sent us that answer to prayer this month in the form of a little 1 1/2 month old baby boy we called Michael.  Michael is our first orphan.  Much to April's dismay, I got to be the one to hold him the whole way home from picking him up from the airport.  Unfortunately for him, mine was the first white face he ever laid eyes on.

So many other things were also going on this month.  We were able to get all the doors and windows put in at the Tomazeo Church.  We fixed up a total of 5 of the rooms at our school in Despinos.  At the guest house that will also be serving as my home we got all the leaks in the plumbing fixed, a window put in the bathroom as well as a new toilet and sink, converted one of the bedrooms into a living room, and the drain fixed in the shower after one of the workers didn't realize that concrete is not supposed to go down a shower drain.  All of that would not have happened if people like you had not helped financially.  You don't know how thankful I am for you!  Thank you.

We also held a special service out in a remote village called Cocoyer where our mother church in Depsinos is trying to plant a new church.  It seemed as if the whole village just about was either sitting under the big tree with us or sitting in their yards listening They were enjoying praising God so much that they didn't even stop when the storm clouds rolled in and it started to rain a little.  We had such a wonderful time in the Lord that evening.

We also got a chance to show the Jesus Film at a little church in La Hatt.  There are no walls on the church yet just some posts sticking out of the ground.  There is a Voodoo temple next door to it though that provided a great wall for us to project the film on to.  Satan put that wall there for people to worship him, but God used it that night to show about 75 people His great love and power.  That's the way our God works!  What Satan means for evil God uses for His glory.

My head is filled with all kinds of stories and answers to pray that I want to tell you about but this update is starting to get pretty lengthy.  We have a lot of things going on that I want to ask you to continue to pray about.

1)  Please pray for those that have recently gotten saved and those that are still under conviction.
2)  God really answered some special prayers concerning our pastors this month, continue to pray for them.
3)  That the God of the harvest will send more workers our way at Haiti Gospel Mission, specifically someone that can travel around to different churches here in the states raising support for the mission.
4)  For all the many ministries God is allowing us to have including baby Michael.
5)  For the safety of the Hess's and the rest of our church family as the threat of riots over record high food prices grows stronger every day.
6) Our big generator broke down beyond the point of repair this month and a new one is going to cost a lot of money, money that we just don't have right now.  Please pray that God will provide that need.
7)  For me as God continues to help me raise my monthly support that is needed for me to move to Haiti to live.  As of right now I have 44% of that raised.

Thank you once again for the time you spend in prayer for us!

July Update

Hey Everybody,

Thank you so much for your prayers!!!  God never stops working and just like the last several months, I have a lot of praises and answered prayers to catch you up on.

I'm flying out for Haiti this Monday the 28th.  I couldn't begin to tell you how excited I am to finally get back to Haiti!  As most of you already know this is not the big move just yet (that is coming at the end of the year, Lord willing).  This trip will only be for a month, but it will be a busy month.  We are going to be putting doors and windows in the church at Tomazeo, working on and repairing the guest house,  helping out with the VBS programs, attending our yearly pastors conference, visiting some of our churches, as well as a number of other things.

I mentioned in the last update that I would tell you more about the work project at the Tomazeo Church, and why it is such a big answer to prayer.  God has used your prayers and support to provide us with the means to put the much needed doors and windows in the Tomazeo Church.  THANK YOU!  Up until now the church has just had openings where the doors and windows were supposed to go.  If they would have tried to put anything like benches in the church they would not have lasted long before they grew legs and walked right out the big opening for the front door.  God has been blessing that church and helping it to grow in number but once the 4 makeshift benches that they do have filled up the growth slowed down.  Now that we are going to be able to completely secure the church we will have the ability to start putting more benches in and getting more and more nonbelievers to come hear the saving message of Christ.

I also told you last time about the way that God so miraculously answered your prayers by providing toys for all the kids that are going to be attending the VBS programs we are having this year.  Well, He wasn't finished pouring out His blessings on those kids.  We have been wanting to give the kids a plate of food each day they come this year but weren't sure where the money for that would come form.  Praise the Lord He knew all along!  He spoke to people's hearts and you responded.  One church here in the states decided that they were going to take the money that their kids brought in to their VBS and send it to us to help pay for the food for the Haitian VBS programs.  Their kids raised over $500 for that need!  Through their support and the support of others we are going to be able to feed all the kids at all the Vacation Bible Schools this year as well as give them the toys that God provided.

God is continuing to bless the ministry and help the new believers to grow in their love for Him.  One of those new believers Bebe, is now building a bamboo hut in his front yard to use as a place to have prayer meetings because he feels like God wants him to reach out to his community!  God is so good and faithful, and to watch Him work as He has been is such a tremendous blessing.  Thank you for letting Him use you and your prayers in such a big way!

Things we need your help praying about:

    1)    For the nonbelievers that God is faithfully dealing with

    2)    For the Christians like Bebe that they will continue to grow in Him
    3)    The upcoming pastors convention
    4)    All the upcoming Vacation Bible Schools
    5)    The Bible study groups that are getting started
    6)    For my trip in to Haiti this coming month and for my friend Larry that will be helping us out for a week
    7)    That God would continue to help my raise the monthly support that I will need to be able to move there full time by the end of the year.

Thank you again so much!

June Update

Hey everybody,

God is so amazing!  We have been in tears this month at some of the ways He has been answering your prayers.  Like last month there is just no way I could tell you about every prayer that has been answered but I wanted to catch you up on a few that touched my heart the most.

The one that brought the most recent tears to my eyes was seeing God gather up toys for the kids in Haiti.  In the last newsletter that Joel and April sent out April had listed off a few items that she needed, items that she can’t get in Haiti, eye drops, baby orajel, and emergen C rehydration drink mixes for the clinic.  She also said that she was hoping to get little prizes to give out to the children that come to our VBS programs this summer (last year she had 280 kids just at one VBS).  To make a long story short we have some churches that are setting up boxes to gather those items up for me to take in to Haiti on my August trip.  We also have a pharmacist that is donating some of the needed items for the clinic.  Yesterday I got a call from someone that told me to go shopping for toys because they were going to pay for a certain amount.  It was all set up by God because He lead me to just the right place at just the right time.  I went to a store that had their little toys 50% off.  I loaded the buggy down with little baby dolls and toy cars and headed to the check out.  The cashier started asking the obvious question of why is a grown man buying a buggy full of baby dolls.  I didn’t know that God had already got the workers of that store to fill up a huge box with toys that they were going to give to the needy.  When I told the lady what the dolls were for she pointed to the box in the floor (that hardly fit in my car) and said you can have those for free!  After the day was over I was setting in my living room fighting back the tears as I sorted through a couple hundred dollars worth of toys that God gathered up all because people like you were praying.  Most of these kids have absolutely nothing.  If they have ever owned a toy it was made out of trash that they dug out of the garbage piles that line the streets.  It would bring tears to your eyes too if you could imagen the smiles on their faces as they get their very own ball, doll, or toy car.  I can’t wait to be able to share pictures of those smiles with you.

Another answer to prayer is the pledges that are coming in for my support.  I shared with you last month that I had 30% of my support raised and asked you to pray that God would allow me to have 50% by my upcoming trip from July 28th to August 28th.  As of right now God has brought the pledged amount to 37%.  Thank you so much for your giving.

The next amazing answers to prayer I want to share with you involves my up coming trip.  I want to share more about it when it gets closer to time, but for now let me tell you this much.  Through your giving and support we are going to be able to totally secure the church at Tomazeo with doors and windows, as well as work on getting some much needed repairs and updates done to the guest house that I will be living in once I move to Haiti at the end of the year.  For lack of space in this newsletter, I’ll explain why that is such a huge answer to prayer in the next update, but thank you and PRAISE GOD for His wonderful ways.

I wish I could tell you about all the other answers to prayer this month like the evangelism soccer ball, the perfect timing on ordering items and tons more.  If I did that though, you would never finish reading, and I haven’t even tried to tell you about what Gods been doing at the mission in Haiti itself this month.  By the way if any of you would like to start getting the email newsletters from Joel and April Hess as well, you can email them at hessjoel@yahoo.com and they will be happy to add you to their contacts.

Things we need your help praying about:

1) Continue to pray for the new believers that God is helping grow
2) For the unbelievers that God is dealing with
3) The continued protection of the Hess family and our church families in Haiti
4) The pastor’s convention and the Jesus Films we are having in August.
5) All the upcoming Vacation Bible Schools we will be having this summer
6) April’s sanity as the clinic keeps getting busier and busier
7) The Bible study group Joel is leading as it continue to grow in its effectiveness
8) The construction projects for this summer
9) Continue to pray that the witchdoctor behind our mission station in Despinos would get saved and that God would shut down that voodoo temple.

Hi - Jesse! How are things going? Good we hope. We just wanted to let you know we left the money for your creole classes with April and Joel. We meant to tell you this before we left, but forgot somehow. Keep in touch! We want to know all about what is happening there and any needs/prayer requests. God Bless You! ~Josh & Misty Petty
